After visiting Carlsbad High School’s broadcasting studio, Associate Principal Jennifer Earl began the process of establishing a broadcast journalism class.

“Not only will the class allow students to create on-air personalities, but it will also provide service to the Hoover community,” Earl said.

The class will be offered starting next year, taught by English teacher Brian Crosby. Its goals are to make the school’s website more user-friendly and to launch bulletin announcements using podcasts, files that can be downloaded onto a computer.

“It’s an opportunity for students who prefer a more hands-on experience,” Crosby said.

In order to launch the podcasts, projectors will be installed in all classrooms by first semester. Earl is currently looking at all possible grants and funds, including discretionary funds. But even if the projectors are not purchased by first semester, the class will still be developed.

Broadcast journalism, which meets the career prep elective requirement, will be open to all students but preferably those with prior knowledge in media arts and websites.

“I expect the class to be challenging, and I look forward to working in a professional environment,” Harut Kazaryan (’12) said.
