Summer school will be offering 35 classes this year compared to 61 classes last year, with lower enrollment compared to previous years. According to Assistant Principal Caroline Sweeney, the drop in enrollment was mostly due to fees.
As a way to decrease GUSD’s budget deficit, all schools in the district cut math analysis and Spanish 7-8 classes while Hoover cut trigonometry class as well. However, students may take the class at CVHS instead.
Foreign language teacher Martha Cooper had been teaching AP Spanish 7-8 in the summer for many years. Now that the class has been cut, she strongly feels that it will affect next year’s AP scores.++
“We can’t substitute the intensive pre-AP preparation students [receive] in the summer,” Cooper said.
Yervand Azatian (’12) was one of the many students looking forward to taking an enrichment class over the summer. He had paid $350 for the class but was given his money back after it was cut.
“The school district ended up cancelling my class, and now I will be forced to take it at GCC,” Azatian said.
Azatian ended up saving money by going to GCC because he will only have to pay $37.50 plus a textbook fee for the same class. Other students are also considering GCC for summer school but might find it difficult to get classes since community colleges are starting to cut classes as well.
