Journalism has been such a big part of my life for the past 2 years and I can’t believe I won’t be making pages next year or writing/editing articles or yelling at Alex to make me a photo poll or hearing Yul sing her conversations or complaining to Biayna about pages or arguing with Crosby to get my way.

Feature Editor: Biayna

Journalism. AKA my life. Saying that I spent all year in this class is no exaggeration—it may be an understatement. As much as I whined about not having the luxury of Banking Day mornings, this was one of the most rewarding experiences ever.
Mr. Crosby- I’m sorry I strayed away from what you call a regular feature section by not doing many students features… But come on, I totally made it “more user-friendly”! Yul- Oh God, come down from your cloud, yeah? Just kidding! That was meant to be said in your tone. I’ll miss your voice next year <3 and I can’t wait to visit you at USC! Rachelle- We still haven’t “pasted” the entire room. It’s okay, we still have a couple of more days! Can you even believe how many hours we spent in this class? Like wow… WoW! Joice- You’re so loud, and though I wanted to punch you during work nights when you were so happy and we were all stressed, I still love you because you’re adorable! Lili- I love how the entire joke wall is covered with quotes by you. Oh, and learn Quark . Freddie (Allen)- Sorry you had to hear my complaints all year! Yeva- I love how you’re not afraid to express your opinion. I’ll miss you! Alex- You know what you just said to Arpineh? “Why are you singing? Did I give you permission to?” Tyrant. Hurry up and get rich so I can marry you and get a black card. Daphers- I love your laugh, I love that nobody ever hates you, and I love that you always get mad at Edward. Eunice- Sorry you had to put up with all of my last minute graphics! I just wanna squish you cause you’re so cute!
Now for my fabulous writers: Agnessa- You are most definitely one of the most talented writers that I have ever met. Just make sure you’re not so absent, haha! Arpineh- You’re the cutest thing! I hope you become the BEST feature editor that this newspaper has ever seen. Alyssa- Be on time! You were doing better these last few months, haha, that was good. Maryam- I love your feisty attitude, good luck next year! Ani- Even though you were a floating writer you did a good job writing for feature!
To all of the other writers, thanks for all of the fun work nights and all of the funny jokes on the wall. I really will miss you all! Good luck next year! And finally, Edward- FAVORITEEEE! I’m your secret admirer. I hope you get the best Tupperware collection ever. I just wanna squish you! Love you!

It is never a happy moment watching a loved family member leave, especially when he is the happiest, luckiest, and most fortunate family member you have. With Kevin Welsh retiring after 40 years on education, it is hard to imagine the spirit of the school remaining the same without a principal who dyes his mustache green on St. Patrick’s Day and does turkey impersonations on Thanksgiving.
Although Welsh is the principal, no one can help but think of a red-haired man constantly jumping from one place to another, cracking jokes. His eccentric personality and unconventional approach is why, according to senior Azadouhi Kalaydjian, “everyone loves him and is willing to listen to him.”
Before Welsh became involved in the educational field, he experimented with theater and stand-up comedy. During that time, he was going to enroll in law school, but after the heartbreaking loss of a close friend due to a car accident, his life “turned upside down.”
Going through a very difficult time after his friend’s death, Welsh engaged himself in volunteering at schools, finding himself feeling very satisfied and enthusiastic when working with students.
“Somewhere, somehow I fell in love with what I was doing,” Welsh said. “I don’t know what the reason is, but I really felt I connected well with the students. They listened to me and I listened to them.”
In 1971, Welsh got his teaching credential and was hired by the GUSD. One of his main goals, from his experience volunteering, was to help students educationally and have them grow socially.
Welsh embarked on his career as a social studies, English, and drama teacher at Rosemont Middle School. Then, Welsh was hired as a counselor at Wilson Middle School until he was transferred to Glendale High.
In 1982, Welsh made his final move to Hoover when he was hired as the dean of students by former Principal Don Duncan, who admired his high level of energy, good communication skills and “dynamic personality.”
Welsh learned from Duncan, whom he refers to as a “maverick” for his creative approach to the job, how to always be a great listener. He feels he learned how to handle different situations and “rise above” the adversity.
“He has definitely left his mark on the school,” Duncan said. “Students and faculty love him and he has an admirable ability to work with students.”
Senior Administrative Secretary Celia Monterrubio has been at the school for 30 years, and was also a secretary to Duncan, said that Welsh “genuinely cares for the well being of everyone–students, faculty and the community.”
Welsh became a principal in 1997 when the superintendent at the time, Jim Brown, decided there should be co-principals in high schools. In 2004, Welsh took sole responsibility as principal.
According to Welsh, being a principal is a “profound, challenging, rewarding, and tremendously exciting” career. As principal, he has grown to be familiar with change as he deals with new students, parents, and the district each year.
But it has been far from easy. As most people can tell from his playful attitude and his entertaining phone calls home, Welsh finds himself to be a very “goofy person.” Welsh believes that when he first became principal, he had an “immature view” of authority, but over time he grew to understand that his level of authority meant more than just ordering people around.
“I learned over time that the more I gave to the school and my duties as principal, the more authority I had,” Welsh said.
Welsh feels a moral obligation to make sure that he is giving the students and school his best. He always took hands-on action, interacting with teachers and visiting classrooms at least once a week so that the teachers understood he was not there to intimidate them but help them meet state standards.
If a teacher was doing particularly well, he would ask them to share his or her effective teaching techniques with him. With Welsh, it was not just about demanding effective work to be done, but involving himself in every way to make sure the school was on the right path.
According to Ara Mgrdichian, Violence Prevention Specialist and Co-Director of the student resource center, Welsh has made himself extremely available to the school.
“He is constantly doing something to better the school educationally and socially,” Mgrdichian said. “His leaving does feel like a great loss, but his contributions are lasting.”
During his early years as principal, Welsh was under a great deal of pressure because of the constant scrutiny from parents, teachers, administrators, the district, and students.
At the time, the safety of the school’s environment was in great question after two gang-related deaths of the school’s students.
Perhaps his greatest achievement as principal is regaining the school’s good reputation and creating a healthy learning environment for his students.
He reassured parents and children that attend Mark Keppel and Balboa Elementary school of the good educational environment on campus.
Welsh made himself very accessible, giving his number to everyone involved in the school so they could reach him at all times. During the lockdown in 2007, he received more than 200 text messages from anxious and terrified students.
The lockdown was a very memorable experience for him because although it was a false alarm, it helped the school better its communication system and prepare for future situations.
“I will never forget the moment when I went outside after I heard someone screaming ‘he is going to kill me’ and the SWAT team made me go down on the floor in my suit,” Welsh said.
Dr. Jennifer Earl, who will be taking Welsh’s place as principal, admires Welsh for putting the school in a good light by communicating with parents and involving the school in community activities, something she hopes to continue.
Amongst Welsh’s more pleasant memories is the school’s 75th alumni gathering, which took place on the football field. The event was a fusion of the school’s past and present which served as a flashback for Welsh when he saw his former students. He loved seeing the school so united as old memories meshed with the new.
Business teacher Joeann Scott who has been part of the school for 31 years admires Welsh’s charismatic yet professional character including memories of him throwing pies at students while also being hit, always dressing up for holidays with the administration, and participating in volleyball matches against students. He even sat in a dunk tank where students tried hitting the target to have him fall in the water.
“He participates in so many activities to be part of the students and so the students can be part of him,” Scott said. “I don’t know any other administrator who would go beyond his limits for the well-being of his students.”
Although many were surprised to hear of Welsh’s retirement, he had originally planned to retire in 2007. However since his twin boys, Joe and Casey, were graduating, he did not want to take the attention away from them.
Welsh is “at peace” and excited with his retirement. When he made the decision to officially retire a year ago, he heard a “voice” in his head that told him it was time. Welsh plans on going back to stand-up comedy and theater.
Welsh has “tremendous confidence” and feels very proud of Earl becoming principal.
“Mr. Welsh has very big shoes to fill,” Earl said.“I can never fill them but I will be working very hard to maintain and build on the strong foundation that he has created for this school.”
Although Welsh will be visiting the campus during events, coaching and consulting principals at other schools, he will not come to “check up” on the school because he believes he needs to give the new administration time and room to grow. He strongly believes that the school is ready for “a new leadership.”
Welsh will be getting a Facebook account in order to keep in touch with students and the school spirit.
“He will be greatly missed by everyone but his retirement came at a good time because he can spend more time with his new granddaughter,” Monterrubio said.
Welsh has experienced his share of “joys, triumphs, and tragedies” as principal. He has seen the school excel on test scores, enter in CIF Tennis championships, beat GHS during BGD, and has even witnessed student deaths.
“You just have to love the job and give yourself over to it,” Welsh said. “It’s not an 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., clock in and clock out kind of deal. You have to think of it as an adventure and take the good with the bad.”

Craig Kupka- Music Teacher- 26 Years

“Music is a never ending journey without a destination,” music teacher Craig Kupka said.
He earned his master’s degree in music composition from the University of California Los Angeles. After graduation, he was invited to play with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
“If someone came up to me when I was 21 and told me I would be a teacher and love it, I would [have] hit them,” he said.
He enjoyed teaching his children music and decided to earn his teaching credentials. He first taught at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. Ten years later, he took on drum corps, orchestra, jazz band, beginning instruments, and choir at Hoover.
“Mr. Kupka is an amazing musician who is very compassionate, sensitive, yet brings a great sense of humor into anything,” Christine Min (’12) said.
He is thankful to the district for their support of all the arts programs, though he will not miss the paperwork and “bureaucracy”.
He plans to run the jazz program at Glendale City College. He will also be playing trombone professionally again, composing music, and occasionally, substituting at Hoover.

Barbara Leedom- Science Teacher- 31 Years

It is uncommon to hear that one has a liking for confusing chemical equations and formulas. However, Barbara Leedom wanted to share her knowledge of how the universe worked.
Her passion for chemistry comes from being able to simplify complex concepts that students can understand easily. Leedom has taught geometry, trigonometry, and algebra in Pasadena and also became head of the science department for seven years. For three years she worked on the Capsi project, developing the global warming curriculum at Caltech.
“I never really liked science; however, Mrs. Leedom made it fun for me and easy to understand,” Emily Garibian (’12)
She has decided to retire this year after 31 years of teaching, in which two years were at Hoover.
“My experience [on campus] has been very positive; there are very well mannered and intellectually interested students,” Leedom said. “Mostly, I will miss the joy that I experience when students learn.”
Leedom plans to travel for the next year or two.

Gail Johnson- Counselor- 18 Years

“Being a counselor is like being a mom to 600 kids. Sometimes you have to be tough, sometimes you have to be nurturing,” counselor Gail Johnson said.
She graduated from Hoover in 1969, and went to Cal State Los Angeles where she earned her teaching credentials in history and social studies.
Soon after, she began teaching at Daily High School. In 1992, she transferred to Hoover to become a counselor. Then in 2000, she became a counselor at CVHS and later came back to Hoover in 2006.
Johnson believes that counseling was the perfect position for her because she enjoys the extra time talking to students.
“[Counseling] also requires you to be a good listener,” Johnson said. “More often, students will solve their own problems once they start talking.”
After she retires, she plans on going on a cruise to Alaska with her husband.

Karen Taylor- English Teacher- 14 Years

English teacher Karen Taylor always performed admirably at school since she was enthusiastic about learning.
It was not until her first two years in college when she discovered her passion for short stories, novels, science and political science.
“I loved people and thought it would be really fun and stimulating to teach, especially to teenagers,” Taylor said.
Taylor began teaching as a sophomore English teacher at Hoover in 1996.
However, Taylor took some time off to focus on her other goals. During that period she wrote several short stories. She even went on to make live action short films. Taylor also flew a small plane by herself around the western U.S. and parts of Mexico.
Taylor looks forward to reading books and more traveling.
Taylor is going to miss Hoover dearly because of the “wonderful staff and interesting students” from whom she learns from everyday.

Kathy Frazer- Councelor- 39 Years

As a child, Kathy Frazer would line up her kittens along the couch and pretend that she was their teacher.
Years later, Frazer began to teach at Wilson Middle School in 1971 as an English and science teacher. After spending more than a decade there, she decided to return to college to earn her master’s degree in guidance and counseling.
In 1987, Frazer was rather surprised to find out that she had gotten the counseling job at Hoover and made the transition from teaching to counseling.
“I spent my first year [as a counselor] crying,” Frazer said. “I missed the classroom [because] I just loved teaching.”
Soon enough, Frazer began to enjoy her job as a counselor: getting a student from point A, the first day of freshman year, to point B, graduation and college. She felt accomplished when her students reached their college goals.
Originally, Frazer planned to retire next year but due to the “incentives for old teachers that decide to retire this year,” she moved her retirement date a year earlier.
Frazer plans to dedicate a majority of her time volunteering, such as helping out at animal shelters.

John Moe- English Teacher- 27 Years

Why does a teacher who loves math end up teaching English for 27 years?
John Moe decided to teach English in 1972 when he learned that it would allow him to teach in foreign countries because it is the universal language. In late 1979, he went back to his roots in China and taught the language to students.
When he returned to the U.S., he taught at Franklin High School in Highland Park.
After teaching there for three years, Moe left to become a real estate agent for six years.
Eventually, Moe returned to teaching because real estate was not his “field of expertise.”
Moe believes he has cemented his abilities as a teacher, especially when it comes to learning the right approach towards students.
“That’s what I like about being a teacher; you never know whose life you will influence,” Moe said.
During his time as a teacher, Moe has acted in several commercials. He will continue acting and working in theatre projects.

Daniel Kimber- Social Science Teacher- 37 Years

Students will soon say goodbye to one of the most beloved teachers to walk through the gates, social science teacher Dan Kimber.
In 1973, Kimber began his teaching career at Wilson Junior High School.
Seven years later, he became a history, English, and Spanish teacher at Hoover and later became the AP U.S. History teacher.
“I enjoy history because it’s subject to interpretation,” Kimber said. “It also helps to explain who and what we are today.”
As a teacher, Kimber enjoys how his students have the ability to keep him young at heart and still have a sense of humor.
In return he hopes to give his students a love of knowledge. Mostly, he wants his students to “not hate history as a subject, and use their brains and the potential they have within them.”
After he retires, Kimber plans to continue writing his weekly column for the Glendale News Press and finish his musical education project with his brother.
“Mr. Kimber has filled Hoover with lots of kindness, love and laughter. He’s the kind of teacher that’s hard to find,” Angelica Castaneda (’11) said.

Dale Lopez- English Teacher- 22 Years

“The feeling of watching students grow older and reach their goal is just great,” English teacher Dale Lopez said.
Lopez graduated high school at the age of 16 and received a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma, Norman in 1963. She then became an English teacher in Oklahoma.
She moved to California, got her master’s degree from Cal State Los Angeles, and became a substitute teacher for the GUSD. In 1988, she was hired to teach English as a Second Language teacher (ESL), and became ESL department chair for 10 years.
“Mrs. Lopez really cares about her students and always wants the best for them,” Lilyan Sarkissian (’13) said.
After her retirement, she plans to remodel her house, go on cruises, and visit her relatives back in Oklahoma.

Doris Tinius- Ceramics Teacher- 35 Years

From a young age, Doris Tinius was fascinated by a teacher’s ability to open up students’ minds and challenge them in ways they could not themselves.
When her husband gave her a potter’s wheel, she was mesmerized by the clay and it was at that moment that she decided to become a ceramics teacher.
Tinius has been teaching for 35 years and credits her “rich” and “rewarding” experience to all her artistic and eager students.
“It’s so rewarding and fun to observe everyone so engaged in the ceramics process and to watch their artistic sensibilities grow,” Tinius said.
According to most of her students, Tinius always manages to bring out the best in her students.
“She is a great teacher who always encourages her students to do their best and achieve goals they thought were impossible,” Vika Guloyan (’11) said.
Tinius plans on learning to play guitar, making a small studio for ceramics and painting, traveling, and studying with various artists.

Three eggs, one cup of water, half a cup of oil, mix in the cake mix, pour and bake and presto, you have got yourself your very own chocolate cake, courtesy of Betty Crocker. But what happens when all you have are eggs, water, oil, and no cake mix?

Edlin Khosravi (’10) has learned the art of baking a cake from scratch, though she only started off with the easy-to-do cake mixes when she was just 9 years old.

And now her hard work and dedication has paid off because Khosravi earned a $56,000 scholarship to The Art Institute in North Hollywood.

Khosravi first heard about this contest her junior year when a former student, Anais Vartanyan, had received an $80,000 scholarship to attend one of the best cooking schools in the country, Johnson and Wales.

There were 76 contestants in the first round and only 30 contestants in the final round.

The contest itself consisted of three tasks: a lengthy application, making a molded salad and a French omelet, and making a dish called Poulet Chasseur avec Pommes Château (Hunter’s Chicken with Turned, Sautéed Potatoes) and Crêpes à la Crème Pâtissière avec une Sauce au Chocolat (Dessert Crêpes with Pastry Cream and Chocolate Sauce).

The first round of the competition was a “breeze” for Khosravi, being one of the first to finish.

Having professional chefs judging and examining Khosravi for the second round made it more intense and “real” for her. But once she prepared what she has been doing for the past two years, her tension disappeared.

It was a surprise to Roznowski when Khosravi had expressed an interest in the competition because she was always “quiet” and had never exhibited any interest before. But Roznowski was “happily surprised because [Khosravi] had the potential to do well.”

Although she does not have any particular dish that she loves to cook, the chicken dish for the scholarship competition was one of the most difficult dishes that she as ever cooked. “She was focused, passionate and dedicated,” Roznowski said. “She practiced, practiced, practiced and never flaked.”

A part of a big family, Khosravi was accustomed to being around a lot of food. However, her main inspiration to seek out a culinary career comes from her grandmother, Emma.

“She would take [a] simple ingredient and make it into something really special,” Khosravi said.

Her grandmother would combine lentils and plain rice, add some sautéed onions and garlic, and it would taste “amazing.”

Khosravi has a great support system, but some misunderstand the true skills needed in order to become a successful chef.

Her own brothers have mocked her from time to time, stating that “it’s not hard to read a recipe and mix things in a bowl.” Khosravi disagrees, claiming that being a chef is much more than reading recipes; you must be good at multi-tasking and understanding how to perfect dishes that are in need of improvement.

Being in the cooking industry requires a lot of skill, long hours and hard work.

“It’s not for everyone,” Khosravi said.

Khosravi’s cooking experience at school started off at a rocky pace. She was not used to using chef knives and she had never been exposed to so many new ingredients, like Jicama, a Mexican turnip. But foods teacher Dawn Roznowski was able to guide her and make her feel comfortable with the art of cooking. Now, Khosravi “never leaves the room.”

She even cooks dinner for her family, whether it be a simple grilled cheese sandwich or a dish as complex as shrimp risotto which takes 40 minutes of constant stirring to completely cook right.

Khosravi plans to get her bachelor’s degree, become a private chef, and travel.

“I have a long way to go until the day comes for me to own my own restaurant,” Khosravi said.

It seems like high school is nothing but work. Everything from the nerves of the first day of school to the lengthy hours studying for AP tests to filling out college applications. However, what gets us all through these years of hardcore studying are exciting events like prom.

Prom may be one of the few high school memories a student will have that does not require ten packs of papers.

It is something we have been looking forward to since we started high school. The dresses, the makeup, the shoes, the limo, and the after party – everything about prom is appealing.

This year’s theme for prom is “Sweet Escape.” According to senior class president Alena Abedi (’10) “Sweet Escape” basically refers to paradise, a place you can go to and relax and have a good time. The prom this year will be held at the Biltmore Hotel due to its simplicity. They have hired the DJ Company, SOS, which will be the entertainment for the night.

Fashion has evolved greatly over the decades. There was even a time when students were attending their proms with dresses that covered everything except their faces, contrary to today’s fashion.

During the 50s, prom became a very important event. Teenage girls began making special shopping trips for the perfect outfit as they began to pay more attention to their prom dresses. They wore inexpensive dresses that were simple and unique. The 50s prom dress had characteristics such as V necklines, oversized bow or fringe details, princess seams or full skirt, plaid and flowing skirts.

The “look” back in 1950s was more youthful and innocent. Among the most popular hairstyles was the poodle cut which framed the face in a round fashion offering a youthful demeanor.

As the 60s rocked on, the prom dresses remained feminine. It was a time of innocence and glamour. The girls dressed very lady-like and showed very little skin with the majority of dress lengths reaching the floor. They were usually accompanied by long, over-the-elbow gloves that made the outfit even more formal. One of the most famous prom dresses of the time was the Montgomery Ward 1964. This black and white dress was made for elegance.

The 1960s offered a very elegant and graceful take on hairstyles for women in contrast to the big hair of the 1950s and headed towards the frizzy and out of control look of the hippie age.

In the 1970s, sequins were very popular, and pastel colors were often found on prom dresses and bridesmaid’s dresses of the era. Prom dresses had matching sheer capes and shoes of the platform variety dominated. The 70s were all about being sexy and standing out from the crowd, from shoes to accessories to clothes to hairstyles.

“We would have live bands singing to rock n’ roll music,” math teacher William LeClear, a prom participant in the 1970s, said. “It wasn’t much different than the prom [of this decade]. We wore tuxedos, our dates wore dresses, and our prom was held at a hotel.”

Since a lot of past trends are making a comeback, it would not be a crime to look at some past trends and apply them to new ones. Neon colors are definitely shining once more like they did in the 80s. During this vivid decade, bright colors such as gold, silver, dark pink and blue were in for prom dresses, as was big hair. The dresses were made from chiffon and were accessorized with spike heels and dark nail polish.

According to government teacher Nareg Keshishian, who went to prom in 1981, there were only seventy people there. Contrary to today’s time, there was a live band and only a Prom Queen since guys did not want to be Prom King.

“We didn’t nearly spend as much money as people do now,” Keshishian said. “I remember going to prom in my ’66 Dodge Dart, wearing a white suit that I already had. My girlfriend wore a dress that she wore as a bridesmaid.”

The 90s focused more on flamboyant dresses, which were shiny, glitzy, and had lots of sequins and accessories. The dresses were accessorized with pointy-toed stilettos.

According to math teacher Mariam Youssef, prom during the 90s was “less blown up than prom nowadays.”

Prom was more laid back and less like a “mini-wedding,” very different from today’s prom.

“After prom, we just went to somebody’s house and played broomball,” Youssef said. “Prom then was not nearly as expensive as it is now. We weren’t willing to pay that much money for one night.”

Nowadays, short dresses for prom are very popular and adored by many. The dresses are mostly made of chiffon, but are much shorter and more revealing. Most of the dresses that are “in” this season are strapless with a sweetheart neckline and have an endless supply of sparkle.

Prom’s fashion is not the only thing that has transformed. The traditions have also changed. Prom for a long period of time used to be held in the high school gymnasium. It was not until 1994 that prom started taking place at a hotel with elaborate decorations and a great view for students to enjoy. However, a post prom party was still held in the gymnasium.

In the past the school held fashion shows for seniors to make it easier for them to decide on their attire for prom. The fashion shows not only were a great way to feature the latest trends but were also a great way to socialize. Stores such as Carraz and Windsor that carry prom dresses sponsored the fashion show. Also, the stores provided each contestant with a customized dress.

An increasing number of athletes, politicians, and celebrities are opening up about their homosexuality, serving as inspirational role models for gay people who are still “in the closet.”

Although it no longer comes as a shock to find out that someone is gay, there are still a great number of anti-gay and lesbian attitudes that discourage many young and elderly homosexuals to feel at ease with themselves.

Phrases such as “you’re gay” when someone commits a stupid deed, associates the word “gay” with negative connotations, which automatically makes people assume that being gay is something bad.

The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) club hopes to take a step further in the fight for human rights and tolerance for gay communities. During human rights week, GSA put up posters of poems written by people who have been directly affected by anti-gay attitudes, referring to this activity as the “I AM CAMPAIGN” because the purpose is for gay individuals to admit who they are.

According to Andrew Beccera (’10), who originally came up with the poster idea, many of the students were inspired to write their own stories and poems during the process of copying the stories from online onto the posters. Although all of the stories were anonymous, the members felt that it is their way of coming out to society.

GSA member Aden Yaghobi (’10) believes that the club provides a sanctuary for gay students where they can feel at ease with themselves and come to terms with who they really are.

“If people are in a group who is tearing down these posters, obviously they will do it with them. But when you pull them aside and talk to them one-on-one and they read these stories for themselves, they usually accept that what they did is wrong,” Yaghobi said.

Although the members were excited about the posters, they were unsure about the kind of reaction they would receive.

During Human Rights Week, the club received mostly positive responses. People they would expect to be against it responded rather neutrally. Most of the freshmen, however, tried tearing down the posters and made fun of the club, which almost resulted in a physical fight.

“When we were putting up the posters, I knew that people were going to pull them down, rip them, spit on them, step on them and even laugh at them,” Beccera said. “But as a club we have to stand up for what we believe in.”

The club has been the most active since it first launched in 1995 by Social Science teacher Daniel Kimber.

In Iran, homosexuality is punishable by death and laws against sodomy are far harsher on men than they are on women. Two Iranian teen boys, Hamzeh Chavi and Loghman Hamzehpour, were beaten and hung for participating in homosexual acts. Although human rights activists were outraged and tried opposing the execution, the government responded with anger toward journalists, not only because they knew what they were doing was wrong but also for reporting the persecutions to the rest of the world.

Watching the young Iranian boys murdered simply because they were willing to accept themselves for who they were is something that should make anyone “with a heart,” squirm, according to Yaghobi.

Although more gay voices are being heard, society is far from accepting same-sex marriage and relations as the issue with Proposition 8 evidently proves. In nations such as Latin America or Iran, where “male macho” culture is prominent, gay individuals are terrified of coming out because revealing their sexuality results in persecution. According to Avert.org, 2,509 gay men were murdered from 1997 to 2007 in Latin America alone.

Have you ever stayed after school one day and happened to notice a sweet, old man going through the garbage to find recyclables? Paul Christiansen is an 84-year-old man who has been coming to Hoover everyday afterschool for the past 10 years to look for bottles and cans he can recycle.

“I decided I needed to get out and get some fresh air,” Christiansen said. “This is my exercise and I just combined it with recycling to help the environment.”

While recycling the bottles and cans does not make much money for him, he still enjoys it because money is not the reason he recycles.

Christiansen’s four children graduated from Hoover years ago. His oldest daughter, Nancy, was the valedictorian of her class; his son, Russel, was on the water polo team, and his youngest daughter, Greta, was the catcher on the softball team.

After Christiansen finishes his recycling, he takes all that he has collected down to the City of Glendale on Chevy Chase.
